DIY Date Night in a Box

For my husband and I, date night is on Friday night, but we find that 90% of the time we can’t think of anything more creative than “dinner and a movie” to do. You could get fancy and check out the website www.howaboutwe.com , where you choose from curated dating “experiences” for couples (currently only available in Seattle, NYC, San Francisco and Chicago). You could also check out the subscription service like Turntable Kitchen where each month you’ll get a box with dinner recipes, necessary dry ingredients and music to set the mood, making the dinner date “oh, you fancy huh”.

But I have to say that there is nothing like putting something together yourself. Since date night is an important part of every relationship and something you both should look forward to, sometimes a little extra effort can make it so worth it. Whether you are in the same city or going long distance, here are some ideas to creating the perfect DIY date night in a box gift for your special person.

Box items can easily be found in a grocery store or dollar store to get you all excited for date night. Consider these boxes the answer to the question “what should we do?” Here we go!

Dinner Date

So the thought of making dinner after a long day may sound like the last thing you want to do, but adding some romance and a super easy recipe that both of you could do together might just be the light to the fire.

Supplies:
Cardboard Box
Votive Candles
McCormick Gourmet Recipe & Seasonings Mix
Mix CD with your favorite tunes
Dessert (I did a classic brownie mix but you could substitute it for your favorite cookies or chocolate, just remember the issue of melting when shipping!)

 Let’s Have a Picnic!

When the weather is nice, how about taking it outside for a date with nature? Grab a blanket or large beach towel and head out to your favorite park for a day of relaxation and fun.

Supplies:
Cardboard Box
Wine
2 Plastic Wine Glasses
2 Napkins
Crackers
Cheese (I used Brie but feel free to use cheddar, Gouda or any other kind, just remember to keep it cold if you are shipping!)
Playing Cards

 Admission for Two: Movie Night

If there is no way you can make that late night flick on date night, how about bringing the movie to you? Grab a classic (could be funny, romantic or action-packed) and open a box with your favorite movie theater treats. Dim the lights and pick a seat!

Supplies:
Cardboard Box
Popcorn Buckets ($1 for 2 at the Dollar Store)
Popcorn Bags
Candy (I like swedish fish and twizzlers)
Chocolate
Movie

With these DIY “Date Night in a Box” ideas, you’ll be on your way to a relaxing, fun and special night for two. Enjoy!

  1. I saw this earlier on one of the link parties and forgot to come over! I LOVE this idea…I wanted to do the subscription boxes, but for one box it was just ridiculous…I can totally get into these ideas! I am going to put a few together! Thank you, thank you, thank you for the idea! 😀

    • I’m so glad you came over! I LOVE subscription boxes, they take minimal effort but can be really personal depending on which one you get. Forget wine of the month, the ones today are so much better 🙂 Thanks for the lovely comment!

  2. I love this! How fun! And you could take turns surprising each other with a fun mystery package. I have never heard of that date ideas website, I’ll have to check it out. .

  3. Great movie for 2 idea, and it’s funny…my husband loves that movie. I might just surprise him this Friday. I’m visiting from creationsbykara.com’s link party.
